June 2023 Happenings

Below are some quick snapshots

June 2023 has quite a few fun events, even though summer is barely beginning. This website shows several Albion events in June, and it also shows some context behind these events. There are some individuals who worked hard to bring special programs to our community, and to see that they continued after their time had come.

Some events happen in Albion each year, like Juneteenth, which was started in Albion by the late Mrs. Carrie Anderson. Mrs. Anderson is recognized as Albion’s “Mother of Juneteenth” for teaching traditions she learned in her birth state of Texas with her family, friends, and neighbors in Michigan.
An event that began in France, and came to the United States with Albion being one of the first cities to celebrate is the World Day of Music, or Fête de la Musique.  This event was introduced here by the late Sue Marcos, the former President of the Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce.  She also helped to introduce the French Market, and the Sister City Program with Noisy-le-Roi in France.

Sue Marcos, President of the Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce, from 1985- 2009 was responsible for Albion’s robust Sister City relationship with Noisy-le-Roi, France. Albion started its own Fête de la Musique the first year the event came to the United States, in 2006.
This simple marker honoring Sue Marcos is located near the Albion Train Depot where the office of the Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce was once located. The stone is not far from the flagpole. On June 21, the longest day of the year, people sometime walk the path near the depot to think about Sue Marcos.
