New Mid Year ‘General Guide’ for 2020
The year 2020 has been marked with unexpected happenings. A global pandemic has caused massive upheaval nationally and locally. Civil rights activists call for the abolishment of systemic racism that was not even recognized by a large part of the population. Public art has taken on increased significance as a marker and influencer of the entrenched culture.
General Guide – the 2020 Annual Edition – which included annual events in Albion and Marshall, became unexpectedly outdated.
Out of the chaos, some small glimmers of light appear from time to time. People appreciate essential workers for their roles in health care, the food supply, sanitation, and mail systems.
The real challenge of mental health during these times is more recognized, and resources are emerging to assist with this greater awareness. There are some ways we can help and things we can do to make a difference.
The General Guide – 2020 Resource Edition lists resources for people of all walks of life and ideas for ways to engage. The fliers will be distributed to every home in Albion and rural Albion the weekend of July 11th, 2020 in the Morning Star shopper newspaper. Homes in the city of Marshall will receive a guide in the Advisor & Chronicle newspaper the same weekend.

This includes faith-based resources such as a church directory with links to online services; mental health resources, including free hotlines and community phone meetings. There is a section about local food options such as Farmers’ Markets, the Albion Food Hub Box, and food delivery for senior citizens in need.
Photos and stories of local art describe what each piece represents, and historical context about the artists who created the work. There are maps of area trails and photography of footbridges in Albion and Marshall, both of which are popular destinations for picnics and walks. The website also has information about Black history, volunteerism, absentee voting, and the upcoming Calhoun County Senior Millage.
General Guide – 2020 Resource Edition, like each edition, is a collectible item. This version has colorful art of geraniums on the cover and is suitable for hanging on the refrigerator or keeping near a desk workstation. There is a list of frequently called numbers, including the businesses whose support make the General Guide possible.
This issue is sponsored by Senior Care Partners P.A.C.E. This non-profit organization recently opened a new location in Albion, near the Oaklawn Dialysis Center on B Drive North. General Guides will also be available at Albion City Hall, Family Fare Albion grocery store, and other locations that are currently open to the public. The General Guide and AlbionMich.net are created by Albion Design & Marketing. This is a local firm generating artistic content of Michigan in print since 1979 and online since 1996.
