Albion Farmers Market Finds New Home Beside River Mural
The Albion Farmers Market is back for the season—and this time, in a fresh location filled with sunshine, art, and local flavor. Now held in the alley beside the former Citizens Bank, the new venue features Albion’s iconic 56-foot River mural that flows along the wall, celebrating the town through all four seasons. It’s a fitting backdrop for the renewed energy and variety that this week’s market brought to downtown Albion.
The market reopened this Wednesday under blue skies and pleasant weather, a welcome change after last week’s cancellation due to severe weather alerts. With temperatures near 84 degrees, vendors and visitors alike enjoyed the warmth and community spirit that defines Albion’s weekly market tradition.
Among the first to greet visitors was Carolyn Gilg, who set up under a pop-up tent surrounded by an impressive selection of heirloom seedlings. Her table overflowed with green life—young squash vines, tomato plants, tender lettuces, fragrant herbs, and even melons—all carefully started from heirloom seeds. “These are old varieties, the kinds that have been grown for generations,” she said. “They’re great for gardeners who want something hardy and flavorful.”
Gilg’s offerings are ideal for backyard gardeners looking to grow their own fresh produce this summer, and her booth had a steady stream of interest throughout the afternoon.
Other vendors contributed their own unique touches to the afternoon market. The inviting scent of fresh-baked bread drew visitors to the Foundry Bakehouse and Deli table, where loaves and other baked treats were offered. Nearby, shoppers could find hand-poured scented candles from Yolanda’s. Another local artisan offered Wildcat souvenirs as well as inspirational plaques and home décor items.
The market’s relocation from Stoffer Plaza was prompted by ongoing construction in that area, as crews work to improve roadways nearby. Organizers hope that the new space—tucked between buildings but open to the sky—will offer an even more engaging atmosphere going forward.
The Albion Farmers Market will continue every Wednesday through the season, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the 300 block of Superior Street. Parking is available nearby, and shade tents and seating make it a comfortable stop even on warm days.
With its combination of locally grown plants, fresh foods, handmade goods, and vibrant surroundings, the market is once again a weekly highlight for Albion. As summer continues, organizers hope even more residents and visitors will stop by to shop, chat, and support the hardworking vendors who help make downtown Albion thrive.
Market Director Emily Verbeke was also on site, sharing that many more farmers are planning to participate in the weeks ahead. Due to this year’s cool spring, some crops are just now ready for market—but she’s optimistic that the selection will continue to grow as the season warms up.
