We are starting the New Year off with a new look to the General Guide. Your copy of General Guide XXVIII was in the free Morning Star shopper newspaper the weekend, December 30th for all Albion residents and also the rural Albion area. The Guides are also distributed to participating businesses early in January 2018. The History Edition of the General Guide features information about historic buildings and traditions in Albion, Marshall, and Michigan.
The Albion Train Depot, built in 1882 and still a functioning transportation center, is featured. Mowrer Agency, which is located in the train depot, is the sponsor for this special one-month edition of the Guide. There are links at GeneralGuide.net to the train schedule, and the history of the old depot, that was refurbished in 1985.
Another image featured is art of the Victory Park sledding hill that is part of a mural in downtown Albion. There is information about the upcoming Cardboard Classic and Ice Wine and Blues, two fun events to look forward to in early February. The Guide shares rare blue moons coming in both January and March of 2018.
The new mural about Marshall, by professional mural artist Kimber Thompson, is shown on the back. Each letter of the mural has an image inside with historical significance, and there is more information about each story online. Also there is an image of a book called January’s Sparrow about a pre Civil War incident in Marshall where residents defended a family against slave catchers in January 1847.
Current events in January 2018 listed in the calendar include the Twelfth Night Celebration at Gardner House Museum on January 6, and 7. Beach related movies at the Bohm Theatre for Friday Matinees and OWN IT Financial Empowerment Fair at Ludington Center on January 20, where home ownership resources will be shared. The 40- year anniversary of the Great Blizzard of 1978 is noted on January 26. The online version of the calendar at GeneralGuide.net has links to more official information about each event.
GeneralGuide.net also has past issues of the General Guide, photos of progress in Albion and Marshall, and Farmer’s Almanac news. Please support the participating businesses listed on the Guide who make the publication possible. Here’s to 2018 and an exciting New Year to come!
We thank all of our readers for the feedback about the Guide. To leave feedback join the Albion Michigan Arts Group on Facebook and post it there, or message us from there. One recent request was for larger type and so this edition should be easier to read.
