Albion College Music Department

A two for one today:

Each spring the Music Department presents a number of scholarships, awards, and prizes to deserving music students. Normally the presentations are made at Honors Convocation and various ensemble spring concerts. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to make the presentations via email. But we still want to publicly recognize these outstanding students. Over the coming weeks, the Albion College Music Department will be sharing a post featuring these individuals. Please take a moment to congratulate all the recipients - and feel free to share the post in celebration!

Vocalist and junior, Dulce Aceves, earned the David L. Strickler Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 1976 in honor of Dr. Strickler, former Music Department Chairman and conductor of the Albion College Choir for 33 years. Dr. Strickler passed away in the fall of 2001. The scholarship has been funded by his friends, Albion College Choir members and alumni, and is presented annually to a choir member with consideration given to character, talent, and the need of the applicant. Dulce was chosen by the director of the choir, Dr. Clayton Parr. In addition to the scholarship award, Dulce’s name will be engraved on a plaque and displayed in the Music Department.

Sophomore violinist, Abby Bork was one of several students to earn a Faculty Commendation Award. The Faculty Commendation Award was designed to recognize upperclassmen who made significant contributions to the department, ensemble(s), or other music related activities. Abby was nominated by our orchestra director, Dr. James Ball. Please congratulate Abby and Dulce on their recognitions!

Junior pianist, San Pham, earned two different departmental recognitions this spring. First, the F. Dudleigh Vernor Music Prize was established by Dr. Rowland in honor of Dr. Vernor, a long-time teacher of organ at Albion College, a member of the Albion class of 1914, and composer of "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi". Dr. Rowland, Dr. and Mrs. Stanley Kresge, and other friends and alumni of Albion funded the monetary prize. It is awarded by vote of the music faculty to the senior or junior organ or piano student at Albion who has been outstanding both in performance and personal character. San’s name will be engraved on a plaque and displayed in the Music Department. Second, San was inducted into the Society of Pi Kappa Lambda. This prestigious honorary music society is made up of juniors and seniors outstanding in scholarly achievement and musicianship. Please congratulate San Pham on her outstanding achievements in music!

I will take two of everything... Lol

Wednesday March 11th, 2020 - 12:33 pm

When I was in college, I walked this bridge several times a week. Mostly to buy a copy of the Detroit Free Press at Hawes Drug Store but often to buy donuts, cookies or a Danish at the bakery one block over. Almost every time I walked the bridge (except in Winter) I'd encounter a local resident (or two, or three) fishing for dinner (carp, the only fish that grew in the Kalamazoo River). While there is a bit of nostalgia in this picture (mostly for the local girl who worked in the bakery) the largest reaction is the hope that Albion has advanced in the past 40+ years. Culture is fine but dinner is more important. ... See MoreSee Less
