The Recorder and Morning Star newspapers welcome letters to the editor from our readers, but there are a few conditions with which we ask you to comply before publication will be considered.
They are:
• All letters must be signed by the writer with address and phone number provided for verification. This includes letters that are sent in by email. All that will be printed is the writer’s name and community of residence, unless the writer requests additional information be included (i.e. a job title, or name of a group the writer is affiliated with, etc.)
• Anonymous letters will not be published.
• All letters are subject to editing for style, grammar and clarity.
• Letters that are libelous or slanderous will not be published.
• Letters that attack a person, organization or business will not be published.
• We will not accept guest columns from candidates for public office or letters to the editor from candidates that pertain to the election. Candidates are encouraged to take out an advertisement to get their message to the voters.
•Letters to the editor supporting or opposing ballot issues will be accepted.
• The newspaper will not publish any letters to the editor that endorse or oppose a candidate for public office. For example, letters that say “vote against Candidate X” or “vote for Candidate X” will be rejected. Those wishing to place such notices in the newspaper will be asked to take out an advertisement for this purpose.
• Letters that show support or criticism for a candidate’s policies are up to the editor’s discretion.
• Letters that serve as a “thank you” will be published at the editor’s discretion. For example, recognizing someone for returning a lost wallet or keys, or a general acknowlegement of an organization or group of people is usually acceptable, however thanking individual sponsors for supporting an event may be considered an ad.
• Please limit words to 300 count. We prefer letters that are printed legibly or typed, double-spaced. Also, the deadline for letters to the editor is Monday at noon. Because space is limited, a letter received by noon does not necessarily guarantee its publication. Letters received after this time may be considered for that week’s publication as room and time allow. We reserve the right to reject letters for any reason at any time without notice. Send letters to: Editor, PO Box 205, Concord, MI 49237
