ALBION HISTORICAL SOCIETY SPEAKER SERIES: GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC MEMORIAL HALL AND MUSEUM IS ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND IN MICHIGAN PHOTO-3457-7003.

Those with an interest in the Civil War will be drawn to the next History Speaker series presented by the Albion Historical Society and the Albion District Library on Wednesday, February 26, starting at 6:00. Keith G. Harrison, president of the board of the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall and Museum, will talk about the history and exhibits at the one-of-a-kind museum in Eaton Rapids.

This museum is the only one in Michigan exclusively dedicated to the memory of the Union veterans of the Civil War and the fraternal organization they founded and participated in. Located in downtown Eaton Rapids, the museum occupies the actual building the veterans have used since 1886 and houses two floors of exhibits and collection storage space.

The Grand Army of the Republic was an organization created by the Union veterans of the Civil War and existed from 1866 to 1956. Five U.S. Presidents have been members of the national organization.

Keith G. Harrison of Holt, Michigan, holds a 1972 Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from Michigan State University and a 1974 Master of Arts degree in Ecology from Western Michigan University. He retired from the state of Michigan in February 2005 after serving for 25 years.

Keith belongs to a number of historical, patriotic, and civic organizations including the 1865-created Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States in which he served as Michigan Commandery Commander from 1986 to 2003 and National Commander-in-Chief from 2009 to 2011.

Keith has been a Civil War reenactor for 33 years. He traces his ancestry back to 47 Union Civil War soldiers, 42 of whom served in Michigan regiments and five from non-Michigan regiments. He also has two ancestors who served with the Confederacy. Following the end of the Civil War, several of his Union veteran ancestors joined local Posts of the Grand Army of the Republic in Michigan.

Keith has served as board president and director of Michigan’s Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall and Museum since its inception in 2013, chair of the Michigan Civil War History Partners, and treasurer of the Friends of Michigan History. He has written three books, one on natural history and two family genealogies. He currently is working on a fourth book on Cass County, Michigan, citizens who served in the Civil War.

This event, which will be presented in the Naomi Lane Room of the Albion District Library, is free and open to the public. For more information about this and upcoming speaker series guests, please contact Jennifer Wood, Local History Archivist at the Albion District Library, at (517) 629-3993 or visit albionhistoricalsociety.org

This event is co-sponsored by Albion Historical Society and the Local History Room at the ADL.

ALBION EARNS MIAA TITLE WITH 66-62 WIN OVER TRINE A Jamezell Davis, Jr layup is what Albion needed to seal their first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular-season championship since 2005. It was a defensive stop on the last possession of the game that held a 66-62 final.

It is the first MIAA title under head coach Jody May and the 7th regular-season championship in the program’s history.

“It was two really good defensive teams…” said Head Coach Jody May before he was cut off by Gatorade showers from his players. “We both know each other so well. This is the fifth time we have played each other in two years, and we know everybody’s tendencies, and it just comes down to making some plays at the end, and we were able to do that.”

A strong defensive performance was the storyline. With both teams being held under 30% from beyond the arc, it was a game that was going to be won from the inside and free throw line. Albion edged Trine in the paint 28-26 and converted on 21 of 25 free-throws, which proved to be crucial down the stretch.

Jamezell Davis, Jr. and Quinton Armstrong was the story in the first half with both contributing 10 points, which combined for 20 of the team’s 30 first-half points. Armstrong led the Britons in the first half with six rebounds while forward teammate Caden Ebeling contributed five. Overall, it was a slow start for the Britons shooting just 38.5% from the field in the first half.

A complete turnaround in the second-half and a strong performance from Caden Ebeling out of the locker-room is what the Britons rode to the final buzzer. Ebeling led the Britons in the second half with 13 points. It wasn’t without struggles as the Britons found themselves down seven with 5:24 left in regulation.

“I want to give Cortez Garland because we called timeout, and we were down seven. We have a play called, and he has the guts to be overplayed and shoot a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line, and it goes in. I really thought that was a turning point for our team, and I think that he was the catalyst for that.”

A Garland jump-shot and two baskets by Caden Ebeling helped push the Britons into the lead going down the final stretch. The layup by Ebeling with 1:39 left was the last time the Britons needed to take the lead thanks to free-throws made by Jamezell Davis, Jr, and Cortez Garland.

Albion will finish out their regular season at home on Saturday against Olivet as they will take time to recognize the seniors. The Britons will look to add to their trophy case after Saturday when they host the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association post-season championship tournament.
Briton Notes

Quinton Armstrong finishes with 14 points and 12 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season
Caden Ebeling finishes with 15 points and 10 rebounds to record his seventh double-double of the season
Cortez Garland finished in double-figures with 10 points and added three steals
Justin McAbee recorded 3 blocks, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists

BRITONS HOLD OFF ST. MARY’S, LOCKED-IN AS THREE-SEED IN MIAA TOURNAMENT NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Albion College women’s basketball team capped off their regular season campaign with a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association victory over St. Mary’s College (Ind.) on February 19th inside the Angela Athletic & Wellness Complex. The Britons (20-5, 12-4 MIAA) captured their twentieth win of the season, outshining the Belles (9-15, 6-9 MIAA), 71-59. For Albion, this is its first 20-win season since the 2007-08 season when they finished with a record of 22-5.

The Purple and Gold started the game on a cold note, shooting 3-of-14 from the field after one-quarter of play. Meanwhile, the Belles created a 5-0 cushion early to which they extended to nine as they closed the first period with a 20-11 edge.

Albion elevated its play in the second quarter outscoring St. Mary’s 21-10. The Britons managed to bridge the gap at 28 thanks to a jumper from junior Rain Hinton with 2:02 remaining in the first half. Then with less than ten seconds left before the horn, senior Emily Bernas dished to Hinton for the score to take their first lead of the game, 32-30.

Sophomore Amanda Larson brought some energy to the Britons at the top of the third period registering two rebounds (one offensive, one defensive), an assist, and a layup in less than three minutes. Later on, a basket by freshman Angelina Mendieta expanded Albion’s advantage to 13 points at the 1:56 mark of the third quarter.

The Britons continued to shoot efficiently in the fourth quarter, highlighted by an and-one conversion by Hinton and a triple by Bernas to go ahead by 18. Despite this, the Belles did not shy away in the final period of play outscoring the Britons 19-18. Yet the Purple and Gold would prevail, making five free throws in the final minute to hold off St. Mary’s, 71-59.

Freshman Elena Welker was ubiquitous for the Britons, recording ten points, four assists, one block, and one steal. Her performance marks the first time she’s obtained an assist, block, and steal while scoring in double-digits. Bernas put up 12 points shooting 2-6 from beyond-the-arc and grabbed eight rebounds on the night. Hinton paced the team in points, earning 30 and collecting ten rebounds to go along with her three steals. The Woodlan High School product’s performance marks her sixth double-double of the season. Senior Evelyn Wischmeyer reached a historic milestone as her two points earned her a spot in the program’s 1000 points club. The Lake Orion native is now the third player to reach this milestone.

The Britons concluded the night shooting 27-69 (39.1%) from the field, 3-14 (21.4%) from three-point range, and 14-27 (51.9%) from the free-throw line. Albion took advantage of St. Mary’s errors scoring 28 points off of turnovers while also outscoring the Belles in second-chance points (19), bench points (14), and points in the paint (36).

“Happy to get a road win on their senior day,” noted Head Coach Doreen Carden. “I thought we had a good second half and got some good looks inside for Rain.”
The Albion College women’s basketball team is now locked-in as the three-seed in the MIAA Tournament. The Britons will host against the fifth-seed (yet to be determined) on Wednesday, February 26th, at 7:30 p.m.

THREE BRITS EARN LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS Three Britons have earned MIAA Lacrosse Player of the Week honors. Freshman Sam Puzevic has been named Men’s Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore Fernando Robison is the Men’s Defensive Player of the Week. Sophomore Carly Schwarz has been named MIAA Women’s Offensive Player of the Week.

The Albion men’s lacrosse team played their only game of the week on Saturday, February 15 when they played Augustana College (IL). In that contest, Puzevic led the game with six goals scored. Robison controlled the field by collecting 24 ground balls, which was 15 more than any other player in the game. The Britons won that game by a final score of 17-11.

In the women’s lacrosse team’s only game last week, they played Lawrence Tech University. Schwarz scored six goals on eight shots while adding two ground balls and four draw controls. The Britons lost that game by a final score of 22-10.

The next game for the men’s lacrosse team is scheduled for Saturday, February 22 against the Otterbein University Cardinals. The Women’s team plans their next game for that same day as they will face the Carroll University Pioneers.
