GENERAL GUIDE – ISSUE XXXII – JULY • AUGUST • SEPTEMBER 2018 – OUTDOOR EDITION

General Guide XXXII -Summer –  the Outdoor Fun Edition for July-August-September 2018 was delivered in the Morning Star shopper newspaper to homes in Albion the weekend of June 29th, 2018.     It was also delivered to homes in Marshall as an insert in the Ad-Visor & Chronicle.   The Guides are also available at participating businesses.  This doublewide issue features fireworks, the Field of Flight and Balloon Festival, canoeing, live music, county fairs, cruise-ins, and back to school info for Albion, Marshall, and Battle Creek.

Since gasoline prices are a bit higher this year than they were a year ago, many families are opting out of larger vacations and going on day-trips along the I-94 corridor for fun and entertainment. The General Guide can help to figure out what places to go to on what day. The Guide is designed to be posted on a refrigerator showing the three months calendars and art of “Summer in the City” as the banner design.

One of the most exciting recurring events this summer is the 15th anniversary season of “Swingin’ at the Shell,” the free concert series at the Victory Park bandshell on Sundays at 6 p.m. This ongoing event goes from mid-July through mid-September and features top local music bands that play original and cover songs.

Many people in Michigan know about the Mackinac Labor Day Bridge Walk, but the Albion Labor Day River Trail Walk over the Bridge is also gaining in popularity. This event starts in Victory Park at 10 a.m. on Labor Day and will be promoted more as the big day draws near. The walk is open for people with all levels of mobility.

Several 5K runs are listed on the calendars: Albion – the Forks 5K, Homer – Whole Hog 5K and Battle Creek – Miles for Memories 5K. For Jackson, there are Friday Cruise-ins listed and the Jackson County Fair on the second full week of August. There are workshops for the Common Thread – Albion-Marshall Resilient Communities Project including a historical performance orchestrated by Judy Tate on Saturday, September 29th. This is a corrected date from the calendar. There are lots of fun days and festivals in each mid-Michigan city, including Athens Summer Homecoming; Homer is Home, car shows and Fall Festival; Marshall’s Welcome to my Garden Tour and Historic Home Tour; Albion’s yard sale weekends and Festival of the Forks.

All these events are posted on Google calendars online with links to official information about each event, and a directory of area calendars for many destinations and organizations. There are also Google maps with walking tours of downtown places to see the arts and culture including the Purple Gang tour in Albion. Come back to visit this page often for new information on entertainment, developments, cross-cultural events, outdoor fun, and Marshall Public Schools’ open houses.
